Anna Capolupo Reconstructs Childhood Memories in 'Piccola Bugia' at Galleria Tiresia, Carrara

exhibition · 2026-04-26

Italian artist Anna Capolupo (born 1983 in Lamezia Terme, lives in Florence) presents her solo exhibition 'Piccola Bugia' at Galleria Tiresia in Carrara, running from June 2025. The show reconstructs her childhood home across four rooms—bedrooms, living room, kitchen, and bathroom—using drawings, paintings on fabric, canvas, and paper, and ceramic sculptures made during a residency at Salemi Ceramic in Sicily. The ceramics are fired at high temperatures to evoke the texture and brownish color of bread and biscuits. Capolupo's work intertwines family memories with earlier research on apotropaic symbols found in breads made for sacred festivals in southern Italy, linking to Greek pinakes, ex-votos, and folk traditions. The exhibition's graphic design references the cover of 'Cioè', a 1980s magazine for Millennials, subtly alluding to the theme of 'little lie'. The gallery, run by three young women, also hosts artist residencies. Capolupo conceived the show during her residency in Carrara, a city known for its marble quarries and the Via Carriona, which historically transported marble blocks to the sea. The exhibition juxtaposes Calabrian and Sicilian imagery with local references, such as the witch Circe in the kitchen, symbolizing emancipated femininity, and echoes the women of July 7 who stopped an invader in nearby Piazza delle Erbe.
