Anna Boghiguian's Colonialism-Themed Show Opens at GAM Milan

exhibition · 2026-04-26

During Milan Art Week, the GAM – Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Milan presents The Four Faces of a Man, a solo exhibition by Canadian-Egyptian artist Anna Boghiguian (born 1946, Cairo), curated by Edoardo Bonaspetti. The show results from a collaboration with Fondazione Henraux, which awarded Boghiguian the Henraux Sculpture Commission 2024 at Miart 2024, prompting her to work with marble for the first time. The exhibition features four new marble sculptures depicting possible faces of a man, derived from earlier clay heads, alongside bronze sphinxes and works in painting, drawing, collage, and installation. Boghiguian's practice explores historical and political themes such as colonialism, human condition, and the cyclical nature of time, linking past and present. The works engage in dialogue with the museum's neoclassical collection from the late 18th and 19th centuries. The artist describes art as a vital source of energy and healing. The exhibition reflects on recurring dynamics of hope, ambition, and conflict throughout history.
