Ann Leda Shapiro's Asian Debut Explores Human-Nature Entanglement at Axel Vervoordt Hong Kong

Ann Leda Shapiro showcased her inaugural solo exhibition in Asia at the Axel Vervoordt Gallery in Hong Kong, named "Body is Landscape." This exhibition highlighted her vivid watercolor-on-paper creations that delve into the connection between human existence and the natural world. Among her artworks, mystical figures and a recurring tree motif serve as a "refracted self-portrait." The painting Mountain Made of Sunshine from 2025 illustrates a leafless tree with flesh-colored branches set against a starry sky. Shapiro's fascination with Eastern holistic philosophy, which she explored during her time volunteering at an AIDS clinic in Texas in the 1980s, influences her themes of balance and interconnectedness. Works such as Confusion and Protection/No Protection (both 2025) express these concepts through a blend of warm and cool colors, transforming biological realities into psychosomatic connections.
