Ankara garbage collectors create library from discarded books

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-04

In Ankara, Turkey, garbage collectors in the Çankaya district have transformed discarded books into a public library. The initiative began years ago when a group of sanitation workers started collecting abandoned books found on the streets or destined for destruction. They initially stored the books at home, then began cataloging them as the collection grew. The project gained community support, with residents donating additional volumes. Mayor of Çankaya, Alper Tasdelen, stated they discussed creating a library from these books and launched it with widespread backing. The workers often searched beyond their shifts, amassing over 6,000 books, including titles in English and French for tourists. The library is housed in a former brick factory at the hygiene department site. Originally intended for municipal employees and their families, it was opened to the entire community. Serhat Baytemur, a founder, expressed his dream of having a library at home, now realized. Ten months after opening, the library lends books to schools and prisons, and serves as a gathering place for cyclists. A reading room and a chess room have also been established.
