Anita Dube to Curate Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2018 with 35 Artists Announced
The Kochi Biennale Foundation has revealed the initial roster of 35 artists for the 2018 Kochi-Muziris Biennale, scheduled from December 12, 2018, to March 29, 2019. Indian artist Anita Dube, appointed by an artistic advisory committee, will direct this fourth edition, continuing the event's practice of artist-curated exhibitions. Dube's vision focuses on exploring possibilities for a non-alienated life, emphasizing listening to marginalized voices, including women, queer communities, oppressed castes, and nature. She aims to transform the biennale into a knowledge laboratory where artists and visitors become active participants. The theme and title remain unannounced. Participating artists span global origins, featuring names like Marlene Dumas from the Netherlands, William Kentridge from South Africa, and Shirin Neshat from Iran. Others include Guerrilla Girls from the USA, Thomas Hirschhorn from Switzerland, and Song Dong from China. Indian representation is strong with artists such as Jitish Kallat, Shilpa Gupta, and Nilima Sheikh. The list also includes Aernout Mik (Netherlands), Akram Zaatari (Lebanon), and Tania Bruguera (Cuba). Dube's approach integrates interactive spaces to foster collaboration and dialogue.
