Anish Kapoor's subway sculptures finally arrive in Naples after decade-long delay

architecture-design · 2026-05-05

In September 2016, work on the Monte Sant'Angelo station in Naples recommenced after a seven-year hiatus marked by legal challenges and neglect. This station will showcase two sculptures by Anish Kapoor, originally commissioned in 2003: one entrance will feature an inverted funnel crafted from corten steel, while the opposite entrance will display an aluminum sculpture, expected to be installed in 2019. Although some work was completed in 2006, one piece lingered on the Pozzuoli pier for several months, with the aluminum sculpture arriving from Germany just two weeks ago. Kapoor voiced his frustration regarding the delays during a June 2016 interview. This metro line is vital for public transportation, linking to Cumana, Circumflegrea railways, and Line 6, and Naples' metro system is acclaimed for its aesthetic appeal and efficiency.
