Anish Kapoor's Mythological Subway Station Transforms Naples Underground

Naples has introduced the Monte Sant'Angelo Station, a project by Anish Kapoor that elevates infrastructure into an artistic experience. The station boasts two distinct entrances: the Monte Sant'Angelo portal, crafted from raw weathering steel, and the Traiano entrance, featuring sleek, radiant tubes. Inside, the tunnel walls offer an immersive experience through light and shadow interplay. Kapoor worked alongside architects Jan Kaplický and Amanda Levete to ensure both aesthetic appeal and practical use. He refers to the station as a "mythological object." This project, which took over twenty years to realize, transforms Naples' Traiano district and exemplifies the "Bilbao Effect," akin to the metro designs in Lisbon and Stockholm that enhance cultural interactions. Kapoor's creation unites art and architecture, making contemporary art more accessible.
