Anish Kapoor's Monumenta Installation at Grand Palais

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Anish Kapoor will present a monumental sculpture titled 'Léviathan' at the Grand Palais in Paris from May 11 to June 23, 2011, as part of the Monumenta program curated by Jean de Loisy. Simultaneously, Galerie Kamel Mennour will host a solo exhibition from May 12 to July 23. This marks Kapoor's first Paris exhibition in nearly thirty years. The artist's work, known for its exploration of space, color, and perception, draws on themes of the body, mythology, and the cosmos. Kapoor's earlier works, such as 'Cloud Gate' (2004) in Chicago and 'Sky Mirror' (2006) in New York, demonstrate his evolving approach to monumentality. His pieces often reference human anatomy, with red wax works like 'Shoot into the Corner' (2008) and 'Svayambh' (2007) evoking blood and flesh. The title 'Léviathan' references the biblical sea monster, symbolizing apocalypse and transformation. The installation is being developed with engineers and will take its final form shortly before the opening. A monograph by Flammarion and a compilation of interviews by Réunion des musées nationaux will be published to coincide with the event.
