Anish Kapoor's Major Exhibition 'Untrue Unreal' Opens at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Palazzo Strozzi in Florence will host a major solo exhibition of British-Indian sculptor Anish Kapoor, titled 'Untrue Unreal', from October 7, 2023 to February 4, 2024. Curated by the museum's director Arturo Galansino and developed in collaboration with the artist, the show features monumental installations, intimate environments, and provocative forms that engage with the Renaissance architecture of Palazzo Strozzi. The exhibition includes both historical works and recent productions, employing materials such as pigment, stone, steel, wax, and silicone to explore dualities of void and mass, absorption and reflection, plasticity and immateriality. Kapoor, born in Bombay in 1954, has a strong connection to Italy: his works are held by MAXXI Rome (including the large PVC piece 'Window'), and he has had solo shows at Fondazione Prada (1995) and elsewhere. In 2022, his foundation opened a second venue in Palazzo Manfrin on Venice's Cannaregio canal, managed by Mario Codognato, coinciding with a retrospective at the Gallerie dell'Accademia during the 59th Venice Biennale. During the 2020 lockdown, Kapoor donated 100 copies of his work 'Blood and Earth' to supporters of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection who contributed at least €5,000 each. Kapoor won the Turner Prize and was knighted in 2013. The Florence exhibition continues Palazzo Strozzi's program of contemporary and nonconformist art, inviting visitors to question their senses and perceptions.
