Anicroches: Sound and Music in a Multisensory Exhibition at Espace Louis Vuitton

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Curated by Fabienne Fulchéri, the exhibition 'Anicroches. Variations, choral et fugue' at Espace culturel Louis Vuitton in Paris (November 18, 2011 – February 19, 2012) brought together works open to musical or sonic potentialities. The partitioned scenography, conceived as a score to be played, invited visitors to invent their own path between interaction and contemplation. Thierry Mouillé's painting 'LSD Song' required the viewer to run a hand over its surface to trigger frantic riffs, while Laurent Saksik's 'Lyre' transformed a minimalist sculpture into a theremin. In Christina Kubisch's installation, visitors wearing headphones wandered through a forest of vines—cables carrying electroacoustic waves from the building. The body became an instrument, as in Charlotte Moorman's 'Bomb Cello,' while other works engaged a social body, such as Mouillé's 'Brass Space, Pavillon 1,' where multiple people could blow simultaneously into hunting horns assembled into a light architecture. The exhibition explored different spaces as conditions of possibility for sound (place, body, instrument), with nearly silent works like Stéphane Vigny's 'machines célibataires' where many cymbals undulate under slight vibration, and Su-Mei Tsé's rotating tree stumps that hint at a future convergence of dendrochronology and musicology.
