Anicka Yi selected for 2020 Tate Modern Turbine Hall Hyundai Commission
Anicka Yi will create the Hyundai Commission for Tate Modern's Turbine Hall from October 2020 to January 2021, succeeding Kara Walker's current installation. The Korean-American artist, based in New York, has a research-driven practice involving collaborations with scientists, technologists, AI specialists, and philosophers. She often incorporates scents as tangible elements in her installations, such as a 'scent of forgetting' developed with a French perfumer and an aroma for Gagosian Gallery evoking wealth and privilege. Yi received the Guggenheim's Hugo Boss Prize in 2016 and has participated in major exhibitions including the Venice Biennale (2019), Whitney Biennial (2017), and Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (2016). This marks the sixth installment in a ten-year commissioning program supported by Hyundai, following works by Tania Bruguera, Superflex, Philippe Parreno, and Abraham Cruzvillegas.
