Angoulême International Comics Festival Cancelled for 2026
The Angoulême International Comics Festival, recognized as the leading comics event globally, will not take place in 2026. This decision was communicated on December 1 by attorneys for 9e Art+, the festival's organizing body, due to pressure from public funding sources. For over five decades, this festival has been hosted in southwestern France but is now confronting a crisis linked to financial management and its reliance on €2 million in annual public funding, which constitutes 45% of its budget. A 2021 investigation uncovered financial irregularities, and CEO Franck Bondoux faced backlash for his authoritarian leadership. Controversies have included all-male Fauve d'Or nominations, a logo redesign, and a 2023 exhibition connected to a child pornography probe. The 2026 edition, scheduled for January 29 to February 1, is officially cancelled, with the status of the 2027 event remaining unclear.
