Angelo Trimarco, art critic and professor, dies at 83

Angelo Trimarco, an influential Italian art critic and professor, died on November 5, 2024, at age 83. Born in Catanzaro in 1941, he earned a philosophy degree in aesthetics from the University of Naples in 1966. He began collaborating with Filiberto Menna at the University of Salerno, where he later became a professor of art criticism history and served as dean of the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy from 1993 to 2002. Trimarco was also a journalist for Il Mattino, covering Naples' cultural scene, and served as commissioner for the Venice Biennale (1993) and the Rome Quadriennale (1986). He chaired the Fondazione Filiberto Menna in Salerno from 2006 to 2016 and co-directed the TV station Telecolore in 1979. His critical work focused on the art system and philosophical interpretation, mentoring scholars like Stefania Zuliani, Antonello Tolve, Eugenio Viola, Maria Giovanna Mancini, and Maria De Vivo. He authored numerous monographs, essays, and catalogs, and directed series such as "Scenari dell'arte" for Guerini editore and "Il sistema dell'arte" for Edizioni la Città del Sole.
