Angelina Jolie directs film on Cambodian genocide for Netflix
Angelina Jolie's fourth directorial effort, 'First They Killed My Father', premieres on Netflix on September 15. The film adapts Loung Ung's memoir about surviving the Khmer Rouge genocide as a five-year-old. Jolie co-wrote the screenplay with Ung. The film was shot in Battambang and Phnom Penh. Cambodian filmmaker Rithy Panh, a genocide survivor and Oscar-nominated director of 'The Missing Picture', served as producer. The Khmer Rouge regime under Pol Pot killed a quarter of Cambodia's population between 1975 and 1979. Jolie first visited Cambodia in 2000 for 'Lara Croft: Tomb Raider', later adopted a Cambodian child and obtained citizenship. Current Prime Minister Hun Sen, a former Khmer Rouge commander who defected in 1977, has been in power since 2013. Jolie is a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador.
