Angelica Raquel's 'Mystic Threads' at McNay Art Museum
The McNay Art Museum in San Antonio presents 'Angelica Raquel: Mystic Threads,' a solo exhibition of fiber-based works exploring Mexican American mysticism, memory, and community. Organized by Liz Paris and Lauren Thompson, the show runs through July 5, 2026. Raquel, who grew up in Laredo on the Texas-Mexico border, uses rug-hooked and gun-tufted yarns, ribbons, felt, beads, and charms to reimagine childhood memories, dreams, legends, and ancestral lore. Key works include 'Grandpa's Magic' (2025), depicting an ear coning ritual; 'Estúpida's Wisdom' (2025), recalling a classroom confrontation with a misogynistic teacher; and 'He Followed A Woman Walking Alone at Night' (2026), based on the Donkey Lady legend, reimagining the figure as a protector of women. The community piece 'Howl Together' (2025), a needle-felted alebrije-like dog, incorporates symbols created by participants in a February 21, 2026 workshop at the McNay. Raquel's practice reclaims narratives, subverts insults, and carries collective stories, blending personal and shared experiences.
