Andy Warhol's Secret Photo Archive Goes Online
The Andy Warhol Foundation is publishing 100,000 private photographs taken by Andy Warhol from 1976 until his death in 1987. The archive, acquired by Stanford University, will be released online by the end of 2019. A preview exhibition runs from September 29, 2018 to January 6, 2019 at the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University. The project is directed by Peggy Phelan and Richard Meyer, Stanford art professors, who note that only about 17% of the photos have been developed. The images function as a visual diary, capturing everything from trash cans to friends, including Warhol's last boyfriend Jon Gould. Faces of subjects are obscured, and viewing is recommended for adult audiences. Concurrently, a major retrospective 'Andy Warhol—From A to B and Back Again' tours the US, starting at the Whitney Museum of American Art (November 12, 2018–March 31, 2019), then moving to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. In Italy, the Vatican will host an exhibition at the Braccio di Carlo Magno in St. Peter's, focusing on Warhol's religious works like 'The Last Supper' (1986), coinciding with the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci's birth in 2019.
