Andy Denzler's Spectral Paintings Reimagine Renaissance Masterpieces

Swiss painter Andy Denzler, born in Zurich in 1965, has developed a distinctive practice centered on the tension between figuration and distortion. His paintings, characterized by blurred horizontal shifts and fragmented figures, explore how images are altered by memory and perception. Denzler's international journey—living in South Africa, New York, Los Angeles, and London—culminated in an MFA from Chelsea College of Art and Design in 2006. Early encounters with Jean-Michel Basquiat's work while photographing for Bruno Bischofberger's catalogues, along with experience in graphic design, photography, and music production, inform his approach. His recent Spectral Paintings series reinterprets Renaissance imagery, notably 'Rescue (After Titian)' (2026), an oil on canvas measuring 210 x 180 cm, derived from Tintoretto's 'St Mark Rescues a Saracen from Shipwreck'. Denzler draws parallels between historical crises—religious conflict, plague, war—and contemporary issues like political instability, climate change, and technological disruption. His process involves extensive layering, scraping, and displacement, creating effects reminiscent of cinematic motion blur. An upcoming exhibition at Galerie Peter Kilchmann in Zurich is scheduled for September 2026, continuing his engagement with collective memory and art history.
