Andrey Esionov's Watercolors at Florence's Accademia delle Arti del Disegno

exhibition · 2026-05-04

Forty-two watercolors by Andrey Esionov are on display at the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno in Florence, presided over by Cristina Acidini. The exhibition, titled 'Neo-nomadi e Autoctoni,' focuses on series produced in recent years. Esionov, born in Tashkent in 1963 to Russian parents, depicts ordinary people caught in motion on the street—an elegant woman with a smartphone, chatting women, a young Black man at a crossroads, and unsettling figures wielding scimitars. His figures 'pierce the paper' like photographic snapshots, revealing a deep knowledge of human anatomy. The artist 'sculpts' with his brush not only muscles and flaccidity but also the restlessness and miseries of 'ethnicities' in perpetual motion. Direct drawing underpins the pictorial rendering. Esionov notes, 'Museums, stations, squares, wherever I am, I always have what I need for a sketch.'
