Andrew Stahl, British painter and educator, 1954–2024
Andrew Stahl, a British painter and educator, has passed away. Renowned for his vibrant paintings that juxtapose various motifs using primary colors and thick layers of paint, he served as a professor of fine art and led the undergraduate painting program at the Slade in London, shaping the careers of many artists. His exhibition 'The Sparkling City' at Matdot Gallery in Bangkok in 2022 showcased cityscapes and portraits influenced by his three-month stay in Thailand. This followed a retrospective at Sharjah Art Foundation in 2019, highlighting his work from 1976 onward. Stahl participated in residencies across multiple countries and, in 1991, received a Wingate scholarship to travel through Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar. He began teaching at the Slade in 1991 and established the Transcultural Artist Network in 2008.
