Andrew Lewis's 'Filtres harmoniques' at Galerie art:concept
Andrew Lewis presents 'Filtres harmoniques' at Galerie art:concept in Paris from December 1, 2012 to January 5, 2013. The exhibition features strange machines that are both melancholic and joyful, which Lewis calls 'sculptures'. These painted objects appear as time distillers, with one cutaway showing a temporal concentrate of England: Kate Middleton as a medieval princess alongside Prince William with a helicopter, and King George VI with a horse. Other works depict the history of science, from the oldest university to the digital age. Lewis is interested in reality, not science fiction, and how science influences daily life. Some machines bear inscriptions like 'Camomille / energy in adversity'. One tells the story of Michael Faraday, his electrical research, rural childhood, work as a deacon and lighthouse superintendent, and his educational lectures for children shown as colorful bonnets on a table. Figures in neutral attire observe these sculptures in empty rooms reminiscent of old museums or cabinets of curiosity. The second gallery, inspired by Gainsborough, shows interiors of these worlds: seminarian students in green English boarding school landscapes, girls glancing at enigmatic machines, sometimes with hamsters. Lewis continues to observe society through his obsessions, creating precipitates of time.
