Andres Serrano Retrospective at Brussels' Royal Museums of Fine Arts
A major retrospective of Andres Serrano (New York, 1950) is on view at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels until August 21. The exhibition assembles a vast corpus of his work, known for its intense, unflinching focus on death, sex, religion, disease, and poverty. Key series include The Morgue, shot in morgues; The History of Sex, which has been repeatedly vandalized (some damaged prints are displayed); and the iconic Piss Christ. A new work, The Denizens of Brussels, created during Serrano's ten-day stay for the installation, offers a honest portrait of the city's homeless.
