Andreco's Flumen Project Unites Art and Science for Rome's Rivers

artist · 2026-04-27

Artist and activist Andreco (born Rome, 1978) launches Flumen, a Climate Art Project combining art, science, and environmental activism to raise awareness about Rome's river ecosystems. The initiative, winner of the EUREKA!ROMA2020-2021-2022 public call, is part of ROMARAMA 2020, a cultural program promoted by Roma Capitale. It involves a network of partners including MAXXI, Palaexpo, Fondazione Baruchello, Roma Tre University, and CNR. After a collective planting at Riserva Naturale dell'Aniene a year ago, Flumen returns to that area and others in Municipio IV (Tevere and Parco di Veio) with activities such as meetings, explorations, performances, exhibitions, and workshops for children and adults. A public event on July 17 from 10:00 to 12:00 will start at Lungotevere Arnaldo da Brescia Scalo de Pinedo and proceed to the confluence with the Aniene, where participants will sample and analyze Tiber waters alongside researchers. ARPA Lazio will provide raw data for comparison. Andreco emphasizes the urgency of addressing climate change, advocating for rivers and green spaces as crucial for urban life, biodiversity, and social cohesion. He calls for a radical shift in development models, prioritizing climate and environmental justice, and cites the Nature Based Solutions framework that views rivers as green-blue infrastructure providing essential ecosystem services.
