Andreas R Andersson: Doubt, Arctic Landscapes, and the Politics of Temporary Art

Andreas R Andersson, an installation artist based in Arvidsjaur, Sápmi, Sweden, works with found industrial and natural materials to create site-specific installations that engage with the militarization, resource extraction, and existential weight of the Arctic. In an interview with Catapult, he discusses his practice, which eschews a fixed studio in favor of working outdoors under the extreme light conditions of the Arctic Circle. Andersson emphasizes doubt as a creative force, stating that art's power lies in asking questions rather than providing answers. His works, such as 'A Burning Crust on Life Support' (Göteborgs Konsthall, 2022) and 'Beowulf' (Luleåbiennalen, 2024, with Karl Sjölund), are temporary; materials are returned to the land or recycled. He has shown internationally at venues including the International Gallery of Contemporary Art in Anchorage, W139 in Amsterdam, and Konstmuseet i Norr in Kiruna. Born in 1982, Andersson studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, Valand Academy in Gothenburg, and Konstfack in Stockholm. He has been in residence at Pikene på Broen in Kirkenes, Bag Factory in Johannesburg, Swedish Lapland AIR in Kiruna, and Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts in Omaha.
