Andreas Lorenschat's 'Father' Installation at Galerie Marion Scharmann

exhibition · 2026-04-24

From January 26 to March 29, 2013, Galerie Marion Scharmann in Cologne showcases a solo exhibition by Andreas Lorenschat. At the heart of the exhibit is a striking installation featuring large golden letters that spell 'Father', inviting varied interpretations of identity. A photograph depicting a spiral extends from the cosmos towards a long-haired human figure. Additionally, nine framed drawings echo the scribbles of his two-year-old daughter. The exhibition intertwines the realms of image and text, as well as drawing and photography. Lorenschat, who studied digital arts at Karlsruhe University under notable figures like Candida Höfer, Dieter Kiessling, and Mischa Kuball, explores textual experiences through visual art. The title piece poses the question, 'What’s the whatness of all whatnesses?' with answers both written and erased. His video 'Die Oma' (2007) features his 93-year-old grandmother reflecting on time.
