Andreas Angelidakis installs colossal columns in Brescia metro station
Greek artist Andreas X. Angelidakis (Athens, 1968) has transformed the Bresciadue metro station in Brescia with four 13-meter-tall columns, unveiled on February 12. The work, titled BrixiaDue, is a permanent addition to SUBBRIXIA, the contemporary art collection spanning the city's 17 metro stations. The columns, clad in rock wool and PVC, reference the Roman columns of the Capitolium and embody Angelidakis's concept of 'soft ruins'—a blend of digital and analog aesthetics rooted in video game culture. The artist, who describes himself as 'an architect who does not build,' has exhibited at Audemars Piguet Contemporary, PAC Milan, and Documenta14. SUBBRIXIA was initiated in 2015 by Brescia Musei, revived in 2019 by Fondazione CAB, and realized with Gruppo Brescia Mobilità and the Comune di Brescia, with curatorial coordination by NERO. Previous permanent interventions include works by Marcello Maloberti (Brixia, 2015, Stazione FS), Patrick Tuttofuoco (Gothic Minerva, 2016, Stazione San Faustino), and Nathalie Du Pasquier (Mind the Gap, 2022, Stazione Vittoria). Temporary works by Rä di Martino, Francesco Fonassi, and Elisabetta Benassi have also been part of the project. The collection will continue to expand across all 14 kilometers of the metro network.
