Andrea Verdura Turns Banned Fishing Nets into Ethical Sandals

Andrea Verdura, a 41-year-old designer from Piombino, Italy, has launched "Verdura Shoes," a line of sandals, boots, and clogs made from discarded fishing nets banned by the European Union to protect endangered marine species. The nets, often abandoned and polluting the Mediterranean, are collected, cleaned, cut, sewn, and dyed with natural pigments. Soles are available in recycled Vibram rubber with cork or vegetable-tanned leather. Verdura's inspiration came from spotting a net entangled on rocks near Piombino, which he instinctively retrieved and saw as a sandal. His startup operates under ethical fashion principles, with support from Sea Shepherd, a nonprofit marine conservation organization. A Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign, running until July 14, 2016, surpassed its $10,000 goal, nearly doubling it before the deadline. The shoes are designed for men, women, and children, featuring perforated, casual styles that pair with shorts, sundresses, or long dresses. Verdura invites the public to report abandoned nets via his website for collection. The project combines local identity, eco-friendly manufacturing, and artisanal craftsmanship.
