Andrea Salvino's Utopian Visions at Ermes Ermes in Rome

The exhibition includes three pieces: the titular large oil painting, a graphic work on paper, and a small stucco and cement sketch. Salvino's exploration utilizes imagery from 20th-century history, politics, and visual culture, reviving lesser-known iconography from various sources to create an unofficial narrative of alternative, resistant minorities. The main painting illustrates life in the Monte Verità commune in Ascona, Switzerland, which, from 1900 for about two decades, attracted individuals pursuing a lifestyle free from societal norms, embracing vegetarianism, nudism, and pacifism. Prominent figures such as Paul Klee, Carl Gustav Jung, and Hermann Hesse were part of this movement. Salvino intertwines factual elements with imaginative interpretations, merging photographic realism with symbolic components, thus transforming visual documents into poignant memories and contemporary reflections on minority power.
