Andrea Sala Designs 2024 Italian Grand Prix Trophy for Pirelli
Italian artist Andrea Sala (born 1976 in Como, based in Milan) has designed the trophy for the 2024 Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix at Monza, commissioned by Pirelli and Pirelli HangarBicocca. The abstract sculptural work, titled VROOOM, evokes Pirelli tires and cars on the starting grid. Made of Valchromat and chromed aluminum, it weighs under five kilograms to be easily lifted by winners. Three copies exist for the podium finishers on September 1, 2024. The project, curated by Giovanna Amadasi, is in its fourth edition, previously involving artists Alice Ronchi, Patrick Tuttofuoco, and Ruth Beraha. Sala, who grew up between Italy and Canada, explored Pirelli's history at Fondazione Pirelli for inspiration. The trophy combines high-tech CNC cutting and 3D fabrication with craftsmanship for chroming and polishing. Sala noted the challenge of strict weight and size constraints, and chose a glossy finish so the trophy shines when raised. The work is part of a partnership between contemporary art and Formula 1, sponsored by Pirelli.
