Andrea Pozzo's Baroque Fresco Goes Online in Gigapixel Detail
Haltadefinizione, a tech company specializing in cultural heritage digitization, has made Andrea Pozzo's fresco 'The Glory of Saint Ignatius' in Rome's Church of Sant'Ignazio di Loyola explorable online in gigapixel resolution. The digital version allows viewers to zoom in up to ten times on every detail of the Baroque masterpiece, which is considered a quintessential example of Roman Baroque with its daring perspectives and illusionistic effects. The digitization coincides with the 500th anniversary of the conversion of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuit order, to which Pozzo belonged. Luca Ponzio, founder of Haltadefinizione, stated that the initiative aims to promote knowledge and dissemination of the artwork during the worldwide celebrations. The project was carried out with permission from the Fondo Edifici di Culto (Fec), the owner of the monument. This is the latest in a series of high-resolution digitizations by Haltadefinizione, following Leonardo da Vinci's 'The Last Supper' and Giotto's fresco cycle in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua.
