Andrea Mastrovito's NYsferatu Reimagines Nosferatu in New York
Andrea Mastrovito, a 38-year-old Italian artist from Bergamo, is creating NYsferatu – Symphony of a Century, a 60-minute hand-drawn animated remake of F.W. Murnau's 1922 silent film Nosferatu. The project involves 30,000 drawings made by Mastrovito and a team of fifteen artists from the Academies of Carrara and Brera. The setting is transposed from Wisborg to contemporary New York City, addressing themes of migration, fear of the other, and urban vampirism. The film is produced with More Art, a New York nonprofit that has worked with artists like Andres Serrano and Joan Jonas. A Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign is underway to raise final funds. The premiere is scheduled for August 2017 in New York, followed by screenings at Galerie Art Bartschi & Cie in Geneva and various museums and festivals throughout 2018. Public screenings in parks and theaters will feature live musical scores by local groups. Workshops with Arab, Chinese, and Latino migrant communities will rewrite captions for key scenes based on their experiences. Mastrovito describes the work as both an aesthetic declaration of love for drawing and a political act of 'ungoverning the city.'
