Andrea Mastrovito's 'I Am Not Legend' Reanimates Romero's Horror Classic

artist · 2026-04-27

Andrea Mastrovito has completed a new feature-length film titled 'I Am Not Legend,' a radical reworking of George A. Romero's 1968 cult horror film 'Night of the Living Dead.' The project follows his 2017 debut 'NYsferatu – Symphony Of A Century,' which similarly reimagined F.W. Murnau's 'Nosferatu' (1922). Mastrovito's technique involves an 'analogical cancellation' of the original zombies: over 100,000 A4 frames from Romero's film were printed, each zombie figure meticulously painted over in white, then the altered frames were digitized and reassembled according to a new script written by Mastrovito. The soundtrack features compositions by Matthew Nolan and Stephen Shannon, with contributions from Maurizio Guarini, a former member of the Italian progressive rock band Goblin, known for scoring Dario Argento's horror films. The film premiered at the Asylum Fantastic Fest in Valmontone, near Rome, a festival dedicated to horror and science fiction. Mastrovito, an Italian artist born in 1984, works across media including video, animation, and installation, often appropriating and transforming existing cinematic works.
