Andrea Martinucci: Painting as a Digital and Physical Dialogue

artist · 2026-04-27

Andrea Martinucci, born in Rome in 1991, lives and works between Milan and Rome. He graduated in Multimedia Design from the Accademia delle Arti e Nuove Tecnologie in Rome. His recent solo shows include 'Will aliens believe in me?' at Banca Sistema Arte Collection, Milan (2019), 'I will give you a taste of your inner desires' at Renata Fabbri Arte Contemporanea, Milan (2019), and 'Glory Black Hole' at Dimora Artica, Milan (2018). Group exhibitions include XX Premio Cairo at Palazzo Reale, Milan (2019), 'A Glass is not a reference for amount' at In De Ruimte Space, Ghent (2019), and 'Naturalia et Artificialia' at a private collector's residence in Bologna (2018). Martinucci's practice oscillates between digital and traditional painting. He collects screenshots from social media, building an archive of images that he later reworks on canvas using acrylic, graphite, earth, and steel. His series '.jpg' titles each painting with its completion date, treating the canvas as a tangible digital file. He explores themes of image negation, eroticism, and the ephemeral nature of digital media. In his exhibition at Renata Fabbri, he painted the statement 'Let me feel' on the wall, connecting all works. He cites Vincenzo Agnetti as an influence and engages with irony and provocation. Martinucci sees painting as both a gift and a prison, a necessary medium for self-reflection. He believes the Italian painting scene is vibrant but warns against following trends without substance.
