Andrea Mantegna Exhibition at Palazzo Madama Explores Renaissance Master's Legacy
A major exhibition on Andrea Mantegna (1431–1506) opened at Palazzo Madama in Turin, curated by Sandrina Bandera, Howard Burns, and Vincenzo Farinella. The show presents a broad corpus of masterpieces and documents that capture the humanist cultural climate of Mantegna's biography. The exhibition is structured around four key themes: Mantegna's masters and models, his ties to power, his engravings and drawings, and his charismatic personality. Mantegna was a pupil of Francesco Squarcione in Padua for six years, learning by copying Roman imperial art from plaster casts. He absorbed influences from Donatello (naturalism and perspective), Paolo Uccello (International Gothic), and Andrea del Castagno (expressive chiaroscuro). He worked for the Este family in Ferrara and three generations of Gonzaga in Mantua, maintaining a peer-to-peer dialogue with patrons. A highlight is the portrait of Cardinal Ludovico Trevisan (c. 1459–60), depicted in three-quarter view like a Roman commander, a novelty for the 15th century. The exhibition also features Mantegna's letters in humanist calligraphy, including correspondence with Lorenzo de' Medici, and his engravings admired by Albrecht Dürer, who planned a trip to Mantua to meet him but arrived after Mantegna's death. Literary tributes from Ariosto, Sannazaro, and others are included. The exhibition was published in Artribune's Grandi Mostre #20.
