Andrea Liberovici publishes sound book on Venice
Composer Andrea Liberovici (b. 1962) has released 'Il libro dei suoni n°1. Veneziacustica' with Squilibri editore. The book is a 'multiple booklet' where each page contains a sound composition under one minute, accessible via QR code, alongside an original watercolor and poem by Liberovici. The work blends sound, image, and text without creating a cinematic effect, allowing each element to be experienced independently. Liberovici describes the interplay between static visuals and dynamic audio as a 'mirror game.' The piece 'Venice: Water Postcards,' combining field recordings with live strings from Quartetto Prometeo, premiered at the Heidelberg Frühling Festival in April 2022. Karole Vail, director of the Collezione Peggy Guggenheim, later hosted the Italian premiere of the work at the museum as a tribute on Peggy Guggenheim's birthday. Liberovici will be artist-in-residence at Columbia University in New York starting January, where he plans to explore the sounds of the city. He is considering further sound books in the series. The interview also touches on his 1998 exhibition 'Ritratti Acustici' at Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Roma curated by Achille Bonito Oliva, and his admiration for artists from Giorgione to Francis Bacon.
