Andrea Giunta Curates 12th Mercosul Biennial with Focus on Black Feminism and Decolonial Perspectives

festival-fair · 2026-04-23

The 12th Mercosul Biennial, set to launch in Porto Alegre, is curated by Andrea Giunta alongside co-curators Dorota Maria Biczel, Fabiana Lopes, and Igor Simões. Giunta notes that the term "feminine" transcends gender, opting for masculine language in the title to challenge binary views. This year’s biennial will address social issues, prominently featuring black feminism, and aims to merge political activism with artistic expression. It showcases artists from Mercosul nations and beyond, embracing decolonial viewpoints while critiquing colonial histories and stereotypes. Events will take place in established art venues such as Museu Iberê Camargo and Margs, with 70% located near Praça da Alfândega. An educational initiative will also be implemented. Giunta alludes to previous exhibitions, including the contentious León Ferrari retrospective in 2004.
