Andrea Fraser's Sing Sing Sound Installation Confronts Whitney Museum Visitors

Andrea Fraser's sound installation Down the River (2016) transformed the Whitney Museum's fifth floor from February 26 to March 13, 2016. Recorded within Sing Sing Correctional Facility's A-block, the audio work transported prison sounds to the museum's open space at 99 Gansevoort Street in New York. Despite physical separation of 32 miles, both institutions share Hudson River views. The installation deliberately failed to blend museum and prison acoustics, highlighting their fundamental incompatibility. Fraser's title references incarceration slang "going up the river," forcing viewers to confront their privileged mobility versus prisoner confinement. This work continues Fraser's institutional critique tradition, following caustic performances like Museum Highlights (1989) and Little Frank and His Carp (2001). At a December 2015 Light Industry talk in Brooklyn, Fraser reflected on audience divisions between those understanding her ironic performances and those accepting them literally. Recent works like L'1% C'est Moi (2011) and There's No Place Like Home (2012) adopt more serious tones than earlier farcical pieces. Visitors experienced startlingly realistic voices amid metallic clangs while overlooking New York landmarks, creating uncomfortable transportation between cultural institution and correctional facility.
