Andrea Francolino's 28 Flags for Ecological Unity at Museo Novecento
Andrea Francolino (born 1979 in Bari) presents the site-specific project 'Humus' at Museo Novecento in Florence, curated by Sergio Risaliti and Luca Puri. The installation features 28 flags in the museum's loggia: one for each European Union member state plus a collective flag representing all. The flags are made of uncolored fabric, differing only by GPS coordinates printed on them—referencing the locations of each country's parliament. Francolino conceived the project in early 2019, seeking a flag that could unite sovereign nations around the common ecological emergency. The arrangement mirrors the seating of national representatives in assembly. Risaliti describes the work as a call to recognize the Earth as a common ground that transcends borders and ethnic defenses. The exhibition runs until April 5. It was realized with support from Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze and in collaboration with Galleria Mazzoleni. A performance took place in Florence streets last September during the vernissage.
