Andrea Camilleri Centenary Exhibition at Palazzo Firenze in Rome
Palazzo Firenze, a 16th-century Roman residence once owned by the Medici family and now home to the Dante Alighieri Society, hosts 'Scene, voci, accenti, scritture: il teatro infinito di Andrea Camilleri' to mark the centenary of the Sicilian writer's birth. Curated by Giulio Ferroni, the exhibition explores Camilleri's cultural and artistic contributions beyond his creation of Inspector Montalbano. It features original manuscripts, letters, photographs, posters, personal objects, multimedia content (interviews, RAI footage), text panels, and large-scale prints. The show highlights Camilleri's engagement with language, memory, civic commitment, humor, and imagination, emphasizing the role of voice and accent. A final section focuses on his interest in visual art, including his booklets on Caravaggio, Guttuso, and Renoir. The exhibition ends with a reenactment of his 2018 monologue 'Conversazione su Tiresia' performed at the Greek Theatre in Syracuse, a year before his death. Palazzo Firenze was built in 1516 for Jacopo Cardelli, later passed to Cardinal Ridolfo Pio da Carpi, renovated by Bartolomeo Ammannati under Pope Paul III, and became Cosimo I de' Medici's Roman residence in 1561, with a courtyard colonnade by Baldovino del Monte. The Dante Alighieri Society, founded in 1889 by Giosuè Carducci, has occupied the palace since 1926.
