Andrea Buglisi completes Falcone and Borsellino murals in Palermo

Andrea Buglisi has completed 'La porta dei Giganti', a large-scale permanent mural in Palermo honoring anti-mafia magistrates Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino. The mural of Falcone appears on a building at via Duca della Verdura, while Borsellino's portrait is on a nearby palazzo in via Sanpolo, above the Ucciardone bunker courtroom where the maxi-trial against Cosa Nostra took place. Falcone is depicted behind bulletproof glass, his face split into brown and faded green halves; Borsellino stares fiercely ahead with a cigar. The work is part of the 'Spazi Capaci/Comunità Capaci' social design project curated by Alessandro de Lisi, produced by the Fondazione Falcone and the Ministry of Education for the 29th anniversary of the Capaci massacre. The three-year project includes four public art interventions in Palermo's memory sites: Peter Demetz's sculpture 'L'attesa' under the Falcone Tree, Velasco Vitali's installation 'Branco' (54 life-sized dogs) in the bunker courtyard, and Igor Scalisi Palminteri's monumental polyptych 'Roveto Ardente' in Piazza Anita Garibaldi, dedicated to Blessed Don Pino Puglisi. The route will be inaugurated on May 23, anniversary of the Capaci massacre, with Education Minister Patrizio Bianchi and state authorities present.
