Andrea Bruciati Reflects on Eight Years Leading Villa Adriana and Villa d'Este

Andrea Bruciati, outgoing director of Villa Adriana and Villa d'Este in Tivoli, discusses his eight-year tenure in an interview with Artribune. Appointed in March 2017 through Dario Franceschini's 'Superdirectors' initiative, Bruciati oversaw five UNESCO sites in Lazio. His background includes directing the Galleria Civica di Monfalcone and leading ArtVerona, where he helped redefine the fair's identity. At Tivoli, he focused on opening spaces such as the Mouseia, the Yourcenar path at Villa Adriana, the Depot, the Orrido Piranesi, and the Aula Pecus at the Santuario di Ercole Vincitore, the cryptoporticus of the Fontana dell'Ovato, and the Grotta di Diana at Villa d'Este. He organized numerous exhibitions, conferences, and publications, aiming to make the villas a 'crucible of ideas' and a 'social laboratory.' Bruciati secured sponsorships from Moroso, Fendi, and Dolce & Gabbana. He acknowledges achieving only about 10% of his planned projects but emphasizes intellectual freedom. His tenure began with a tribute to Patty Pravo and ended with Lucio Dalla's 'Futura.' He calls for more vision and courage in cultural management, noting that revolutions require passion.
