André Raffray: A Posthumous Retrospective at Musée des Beaux-Arts de Brest
From December 18, 2009, to April 4, 2010, a retrospective dedicated to André Raffray was presented by the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Brest and Frac Bretagne. Raffray, who passed away on January 6, 2010, was born in 1925 and was a self-taught artist celebrated for his gouaches for Les Brigades du Tigre and twelve illustrations depicting Marcel Duchamp's life for a 1977 exhibition at the Centre Pompidou. His notable series, Les Peintures recommencées (1977–1984), involved recreating masterpieces on-site. From 1984 onward, he produced colored pencil Diptyques de paysages. The Déchirés series contrasted replicas of lost artworks with modern photographs, while his final series, Diptyques d'autoportraits, combined recreated self-portraits with contemporary images. Curated by Françoise Daniel and Catherine Elkar, the exhibition highlighted Raffray's distinctive representation style.
