Andre D. Wagner photographs Mallorca's landscapes for Google Pixel project

artist · 2026-05-14

Photographer Andre D. Wagner, known for documenting Black youth and communities in New York as well as portraits of famous faces, has turned his lens to the landscapes of Mallorca, Spain, using a Google Pixel phone. The work was created during an artist residency at MEKKA, which emphasizes rest and simplicity. Wagner describes his approach as one of openness, allowing the place to reveal itself rather than imposing predetermined narratives. He contrasts this with his usual focus on people, noting that landscapes offer a release from human drama while still engaging with light, composition, and texture. Wagner stayed in the mountains of Sóller and recommends renting a Vespa for an immersive experience. He visited during the off-season, which he found particularly beautiful. The project is part of Google Pixel's Creator Labs Season 10, an incubator program that provides photographers with capital and technology for non-commercial work. Wagner also has a forthcoming photo book, 'New City, Old Blues,' to be published this year by the Gordon Parks Foundation and Steidl, compiling a decade of work in New York. Additionally, he has been traveling extensively, spending time in Japan and India, which is inspiring new work. The interview was conducted by Charlotte Gunn for Wallpaper* magazine.
