Anders Petersen's Naples photographs on view at Spot Home Gallery

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Swedish photographer Anders Petersen (born 1944, Stockholm) presents a series of about 60 black-and-white images from his 2022 residency in Naples at Spot Home Gallery. The series, titled "Napoli," captures the city's chaos, vitality, and theatrical street life. Petersen, named Photographer of the Year at Rencontres d'Arles 2003, discusses his analog Contax T3 camera, his vertical framing, and his approach of patient observation and mutual respect with subjects. He still prints in the darkroom but only for collectors and museums due to back surgery. Petersen recounts his early work at Hamburg's Café Lehmitz (1967-1970), which became a cult book published by Schirmer/Mosel in 1978. He credits mentor Christer Strömholm, whom he met in 1966 at Stockholm's School of Photography, for teaching him honesty and reciprocity in photography. The exhibition is curated by Cristina Ferraiuolo and organized with Carlo Roberti of TPW.
