Ancient Egypt Exhibition Draws 1.4 Million in Rio, Opens in São Paulo CCBB

exhibition · 2026-04-23

The exhibition 'Ancient Egypt: From Daily Life to Eternity' has opened at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil (CCBB) in São Paulo, running until May 11. This follows a highly successful presentation in Rio de Janeiro, where it attracted over 1.4 million visitors. The show features 140 artifacts on loan from the Museo Egizio in Turin, Italy, which houses the world's second-largest Egyptological collection. The pieces include both original items and replicas, spanning the period from 3100 BC to 30 BC. Among the original artifacts are a human mummy, statues, statuettes, a Book of the Dead on papyrus, liturgical objects, sarcophagi, and vessels. A scaled-down pyramid is installed in the exhibition space. The display is organized into three thematic sections: daily life, religion, and eternity. An interactive section offers a 3D video reconstruction of monuments, allowing visitors a virtual tour of ancient Egyptian sites. Curators Pieter Tjabbes and Paolo Marini state the primary goal is to provide a broad and diverse public with a qualified understanding of Egyptian culture, which maintained consistent religious, political, artistic, and literary models for three millennia. The exhibition will subsequently travel to the CCBB locations in Brasília and Belo Horizonte.
