Ancient city of Gabii near Rome opens to public with events and Pistoletto installation

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

The archaeological site of Gabii, an ancient city predating Rome located about 20 km from the capital along the Via Prenestina, is being reopened to the public through a valorization project called Gabiinsieme. From June 6 to October 10, 2021, seven days of free events including guided tours, performances, workshops, and an installation by Michelangelo Pistoletto will take place. The site features remains from the protohistoric era through the Middle Ages, including the Sanctuary of Juno Gabina (2nd century BC), the Regia (6th century BC), public baths with mosaic floors, and medieval structures. The project is promoted by the Soprintendenza Speciale di Roma Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio in collaboration with Municipio Roma VI delle Torri, the University of Rome Tor Vergata, and other research institutions under the S.U.S.A. program. Soprintendente Daniela Porro expressed hope that these events will lead to continuous public access. Pistoletto's installation '100 panchine per Roma' will be presented in July.
