Anantara Restores Amalfi's Oldest Cloister in Former Convent

The luxury hotel group Anantara has restored the 1223 cloister of the former Convento dei Cappuccini in Amalfi, the oldest surviving cloister in the city. The restoration, carried out in synergy with the Municipality of Amalfi and under the supervision of the Soprintendenza ABAP for Salerno and Avellino provinces, was managed by Daedalus Restauri. It included the recovery of an ancient fresco depicting Jesus appearing on Lake Tiberias to Saint Peter, the oldest known representation of Amalfi. The fresco is now visible on the left wall of the church entrance. Archaeological artifacts were also restored and will be displayed at the site. The convent, built in 1212, originally housed a Cistercian community, later the Capuchins, and became a hotel in 1885. Notable guests included Richard Wagner, Salvatore Quasimodo, Victor Hugo, Greta Garbo, and Elizabeth Taylor. Anantara took over the property in 2023 from NH Collection. Mayor Daniele Marino expressed gratitude, noting the restoration aligns with a broader strategy to preserve Amalfi's cultural heritage, including previous restorations of the Fontana di S. Andrea, the bronze statue of Flavio Gioia, and other artifacts.
