An Unexpected Space of Freedom: Inner Architecture at Venice Biennale

exhibition · 2026-04-27

During the 18th Venice Architecture Biennale, the Beatrice Burati Anderson Art Space & Gallery presents "An unexpected space of freedom," an intimate and spiritual exhibition curated by Carla Subrizi. The show features installations and performances by Emilio Fantin (born 1954 in Bassano del Grappa) and Marzio Zorio (born 1985 in Moncalieri), exploring themes of inner space, imagination, and immaterial architecture. The gallery space, opened in 2021 with a performance by Gianfranco Baruchello, is divided by a canal whose water both separates and connects two zones. Zorio's "Senza Titolo (Coppia di Aste)" creates an invisible bridge of sound and light using two wooden rods on each side of the canal, allowing visitors to generate sounds that echo between the spaces. His "Senza Titolo (Bussole)" features altered compasses whose needles move in response to sound and vibrations from visitors rather than magnetic north. In the second space, Fantin's performance "Improvvisazione interiore 2" involved six people climbing six two-meter-tall metal chairs to share intimate narratives between sleep and wakefulness; these recorded stories continue to play in the room throughout the exhibition. Sand on the floor, a remnant from the 2021 performance, traces visitors' movements. The exhibition runs during the Biennale period, hidden among Venice's calli.
