Amsterdam's Warmoes Biennale Explores Queerness, Gentrification Through Intimacy Salon

festival-fair · 2026-04-19

On May 2, the Warmoes Biennale will present an INTIMACY SALON that delves into the theme of intimacy within urban settings, reflecting on Amsterdam's queer heritage and the impacts of gentrification. Agatha Zwierzynska has crafted a small-scale replica of Casa Maria, a former queer bar that was replaced by HOT or NOT on Warmoesstraat, where excavations in 1983 uncovered sixteen house foundations. Bart Lunenburg investigates architectural history through wood-based pieces like 'Nocturne (Beam)' and 'Nocturne (Day after night after day)', drawing inspiration from the city’s ten million underground trees. Additionally, a local sex toy shop offers non-phallic items, such as a €39.95 ghost-shaped toy, highlighting the transient nature of sexuality. The INTIMACY SALON will explore how environments can nurture emotional, physical, and intellectual bonds.
