Amsterdam Hotel Redesigned as a Van Gogh Painting

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

Hotel Meininger Amsterdam City West has redesigned its common areas to evoke the paintings of Vincent van Gogh. The renovation, led by Berlin architect Christian Sandor Tschersich van Lava, transforms the reception, bar, and stairwell into a three-dimensional interpretation of van Gogh's works, including his self-portrait. Acoustic ceiling panels mimic the artist's brushstrokes in color and arrangement. The hotel, part of the Meininger chain known for budget accommodations across Europe, opened in 2012 and underwent expansion in 2016, increasing capacity from 1,177 to 1,585 beds. The chain's other properties also follow themed designs, such as Milan Lambrate's "Dolce vita on two wheels" and Rome Termini's cinema-inspired decor. The Amsterdam hotel is located near Sloterdijk station.
