Amrit Karki to Debut New Work at 2026 sā Ladakh Biennale
The Rubin will serve as an art partner for the 2026 sā Ladakh Biennale, supporting Nepalese artist Amrit Karki in creating a new work. The biennale runs from August 1–10 across the Leh-Kargil corridor in Ladakh, India, at altitudes over 3,000 meters. It is conceived as a non-white cube event with zero-to-minimal-footprint practices, engaging villages and open landscapes. Karki (b. 1990) is one of 24 artists and the first from Nepal to participate. After a monthlong residency in July, he will develop work in dialogue with the terrain. Karki, a visual and performing artist based in Pokhara, is known for durational works exploring the ephemeral and eternal. In 2024, he created a five-day performance at the Nepal Art Council, commissioned by the Rubin for the exhibition Reimagine: Himalayan Art Now, made possible through the Marina Abramović Institute. He received the 2019–2020 UNESCO Madanjeet Singh Institute of Asian Arts Scholarship and the 2020 Creative Young Artist Award in Nepal. His solo exhibitions include Breathing Through the Stillness (2022) and Undefiled (2021), and his work has been shown at APAP7 in Anyang, Fantasy Island in Incheon, the Islamabad International Art Festival, the Asian Art Biennale Bangladesh, and the Kathmandu Triennale.
